Here is the uncomfortable bit: you probably cannot smell your own house. Noses tune out constant smells within minutes, which is why dog owners are always the last to know. If visitors pause slightly at the door, or you catch it yourself after a week away, this is the guide. The fix is not scented candles. It is knowing where the smell actually lives.

where it lives, in order

His bedding. The single biggest source in almost every home. A dog bed absorbs skin oils, drool and damp every day, and most beds get washed a few times a year. Wash the covers weekly or fortnightly, on the hottest setting the label allows, and dry them completely. If the inner cushion has soaked through and smells even when the cover is clean, replace it. This one change fixes more houses than everything else combined.

The soft stuff he touches. Sofa, cushions, throws, rugs, the spot on the carpet where he always lies, your bed if he is allowed on it (and the honest answer is he is). Fabric holds oils and hair, and hair holds smell. Vacuum the fabric, not just the floor, wash the washable layers, and put a washable throw wherever he has claimed so the smell soaks into something you can launder.

The dog himself. A clean house with a smelly dog stays smelly for about an hour. If he has a persistent funk on him, work through why a dog still smells after a bath, because a damp undercoat or greasy coat re-scents everything he touches. And a wet dog after a walk needs drying properly, not just letting him sort himself out on the carpet.

The invisible bits. His collar and harness (wash them, they get rank), food bowls and the mat under them, and anywhere an accident once happened. Old urine in carpet or floorboards needs an enzymatic cleaner to actually break it down; ordinary cleaners fade it for a week and then it returns on humid days.

the weekly routine that keeps it away

• Bedding covers in the wash, dried fully.
• Vacuum the floors and the fabric he lies on. Slowly. A fast pass takes the crumbs and leaves the hair.
• Wipe him down after wet or muddy walks at the door, not the sofa. A waterless clean mid-week keeps the coat fresh without a bath.
• Air the place properly once a day if the weather lets you. Ten minutes of through-draught does more than any plug-in.

what not to bother with

Air fresheners, scented candles and fabric perfumes stack a second smell on top of the first, and the combination is worse than either. They have their place once the sources are actually clean, but as a fix they are a rented solution.
